Western Regional Graduate Program 

The School of Mining Engineering and Mineral Resources offers WRGP-eligible graduate degrees that allow students from participating western states to pay in-state tuition rates for select programs.

Eligible Programs in Mining Engineering

  • Master of Science (MS) in Mining, Geological & Geophysical Engineering
  • Master of Engineering (ME) in Mining, Geological & Geophysical Engineering (In-person)

Master of Science (MS) Program

This research-focused degree allows students to explore advanced topics in mining, geomechanics, mineral processing, and sustainability while working closely with faculty.

Program Highlights:

  • Thesis  option only
  • Hands-on lab and field experience
  • Preparation for doctoral studies or advanced industry roles

Admissions Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field
  • GRE Scores:
    • GRE General Test is required
    • Competitive applicants typically score in the top 85th percentile

  • English Proficiency (for International Applicants):
    • TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 79
    • TOEFL PBT: Minimum score of 550
    • IELTS: Overall band score of 7, with no individual section below 6
    • PTE Academic: Minimum score of 60
    • CEPT Full Academic Test: Minimum total score of 110
    • Scores must be dated within 2 years of the term of application

Master of Engineering (ME) Program (In-Person)

This professional master’s program emphasizes practical and managerial skills for careers in the mining industry. It does not require a thesis and is ideal for working professionals.

Program Highlights:

  • Customizable curriculum based on career goals
  • Non-thesis based only
  • No GRE required
  • Courses in mine safety, automation, mineral economics, and project management

Admissions Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field
  • English Proficiency (for International Applicants):

WRGP Eligibility

To qualify for WRGP tuition rates, students must reside in one of the WRGP states and meet university admissions standards.

WRGP states include: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
